The Supermarine Spitfire (U.S. Service) was a British-designed fighter aircraft adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces in limited numbers during World War II. Supplied through cooperation with the Royal Air Force, it provided American pilots with a high-performance interceptor before domestic fighters were widely available in overseas campaigns. Used primarily in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the early European air war, U.S.-flown Spitfires maintained the aircraft’s reputation for speed, agility, and reliability. Though soon supplanted by American types like the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang, the Spitfire played a valuable transitional role in U.S. aerial operations.
